Volunteer Voices: why Jeff is one of our drivers
People often ask us why they should volunteer with us. While our team could supply you with a multitude of reasons, we believe the most meaningful answers come from our volunteers themselves.
For Volunteers’ Week, we’re proud to share another of our Volunteer Voices – real stories, from real people, in their own words, offering a genuine insight into what volunteering with us is really like.
Today we’re delighted to share Jeff’s story.
Finding purpose in retirement
“I became a volunteer when I semi-retired and found myself with two days off each week. I wanted to do something meaningful with that time.
Getting started
“I visited a volunteer centre in St Mary’s (SVS – Southampton Voluntary Services) and was told that Communicare were looking for drivers.
“I decided to give it a go, and I quickly realised how much I enjoyed helping others. It makes me feel good to be able to give something back to the community.
Feeling part of the team
“I very quickly began to feel like part of the Communicare team. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming, which made it easy to settle in.
“It’s a great feeling to be part of something that is making a real difference.”
Making a difference every day
“I also feel that the people I help, like Sarla and Santosh, really appreciate it. Being able to provide transport means they can get out, attend appointments, and meet other people.
“For many, it’s more than just a lift – it’s an opportunity to stay connected and be part of the community.”
Why volunteering matters
“Helping others has been incredibly rewarding. Volunteering has given me purpose, something positive to focus on, and the chance to meet new people.
“I would definitely recommend it to others – it’s a great way to give back and feel part of your community.”
What Santosh says
“I from my heart appreciate what Communicare is doing for me. The volunteers are very pleasant and helpful.
“The staff in the office are very polite and helpful. This service has made me go out more. At the surgery they walk in with you and wait to bring you home. Thank you so much all at Communicare.”
