Our Volunteer Conference 2026: A wonderful event full of learning, connection & celebration

Last Saturday, March 14 saw volunteers, speakers and supporters come together for our Communicare Volunteer Conference 2026 at Shirley Baptist Church and what a fantastic event it was!

The event was buzzing from the moment doors opened for coffee and registration at 10am, setting the tone for a welcoming, well‑attended and uplifting gathering.

Rich & varied programme

The conference offered a rich and varied programme, providing something meaningful for everyone.

Morning workshops

Our morning workshops covered a wide mix of important topics, from what to do if someone falls, led by former Falls Service lead physiotherapist Sally Ann Belward, who is also one of our Trustees, to navigating life after a stroke, a powerful session delivered by Ranj Parmar, Andy Clay and Lindsey Fraser from Different Strokes.

Thoughtful sessions

Volunteers also explored thoughtful sessions like walking alongside those living with dementia, run by Jackie Cooper from Caraway, and a fascinating look at Artificial Intelligence with Professor Leslie Carr from the University of Southampton.

Energy & enthusiasm

The afternoon continued with equal energy and enthusiasm. Workshops included an insightful Introduction to Autism with Rachel and David Carter from the National Autistic Society and an active and engaging ‘Why Keeping Active Matters’ session with Clinical Personal Trainer Andy Haigh.

Origami swans

There was also a creative craft session with Communiteer Darren Blakeman, where wonderful origami swans were made to take home, and an important workshop on Communicare’s future planning, led by Trustee Su Mihelic and Manager Annie Clewlow.

Raffle & round‑up

We also enjoyed a shared lunch, time to chat, and a chance to deepen the sense of community that makes our charity so special. The midday break ended with a short presentation on keeping everyone safe, a raffle and an appreciative, brief round‑up session.

Above all, the conference highlighted everything that’s at the heart of what we do: human connection, people supporting others in their community, being good neighbours, looking after each other and boosting social connectedness. The turnout was brilliant, the atmosphere full of positivity and purpose, and the feedback incredibly encouraging.

A huge thank you

To every volunteer who attended – thank you. Your commitment, energy and willingness to keep learning is what enables us to support so many people across Southampton.

To each of our expert speakers – your knowledge, generosity and passion made the event truly memorable.

Events like this remind us just how strong and caring our community is. We are already looking forward to next year!
