Volunteering: The secret to ageing well and becoming a SuperAger

Volunteering: The secret to ageing well and becoming a SuperAger

If you’re looking for a powerful, research‑backed way to stay healthier, happier and mentally sharper as you age, volunteering may be one of the most effective tools available.

Across the UK and Europe, large‑scale studies show that giving your time not only strengthens communities but also boosts your own emotional and cognitive well‑being – key qualities associated with becoming a SuperAger.

Higher mental well‑being

In the UK, a major longitudinal study using data from over 66,000 participants found that people who volunteered regularly experienced significantly higher mental well‑being than those who never volunteered.

Notably, these benefits became especially strong after age 40 and continued into old age, helping to offset the natural decline in well‑being that many people experience as they get older.

Better emotional well‑being

Across Europe, the evidence is just as compelling. A study of nearly 20,000 older adults across 15 countries found that engaging in voluntary or charity activities weekly or more was linked to better emotional well‑being, fewer limitations in daily living, and even a lower risk of being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease over a six‑year period.

Powerful well-being loop

This research highlights a powerful well-being loop: better well‑being encourages more volunteering, while volunteering further enhances well‑being.

Consistent positive relationship

Another Europe‑wide mega‑analysis covering 22 countries confirmed a consistent positive relationship between volunteering and health, with the strongest benefits observed in adults aged 60 and above.

Even small increases in volunteering led to measurable improvements in self‑rated health, especially among those starting in poorer health.

SuperAger traits

Together, this UK and European evidence shows that volunteering helps build emotional resilience, supports cognitive health and sustains daily functioning – all traits found in SuperAgers.

By giving your time, you may also be giving yourself a longer, sharper and more connected life.
