Volunteers’ Week 2026 – sharing stories of connection & community

Volunteers’ Week 2026 – sharing stories of connection & community

We’re marking Volunteers’ Week (June 1–7, 2026) by sharing some of our Communiteers stories highlighting the life-changing impact volunteering can have – not only on those they help, but also on themselves.

Through our ‘Volunteer Voices’, we’re offering an insight into the power of connection and the many ways people can get involved.

Meaningful volunteering

Our Manager, Annie explains: “As part of Volunteers’ Week 2026, several of our volunteers will be sharing their own stories in their own words on our website in our ‘Volunteer Voices’ series of blogs, giving a real sense of what volunteering with us is all about.

“These stories show just how meaningful volunteering can be – not only for the people we support, but for the volunteers themselves. We often hear how it boosts confidence, provides purpose and helps people feel more connected. There really is something for everyone and we’re always looking for more people to join our wonderful team of Communiteers, as we call our volunteers.”

Sharing experiences

Among those sharing their experiences is Darren Blakeman, who volunteers at the Friendship Group at Brew & You Café in Millbrook.

He says: “Volunteering has given me more than I expected. It’s helped boost my confidence and self-esteem and given me a renewed sense of self-worth. It’s also helped me get out and reconnect with the world around me. Being part of the group means helping people connect, make new friends and feel like they truly belong. It’s incredibly rewarding to see people grow in confidence and move away from loneliness.”

Boost social connectedness

Volunteer Gwen Appleton helped establish the Sholing Friends group. After losing confidence when she stopped driving, Gwen worked with Yazmin Holtby, Local Housing Manager at Hart Court, and us to create a welcoming weekly group that now brings people together from across the area, helping boost social connectedness and build friendships.

She explains: “What started as a personal challenge for me has turned into something truly special and it’s been just as rewarding for me, as a volunteer, as it has for everyone who comes along.”

Real connection

Another volunteer, Sue Daw, supports our telephone service, where regular calls help build meaningful connections with people who may otherwise feel isolated. Through these weekly conversations, Sue has formed a strong bond with service user Joan.

Sue says: “Seeing an advert for volunteers came at just the right time when I was feeling lonely myself. It gave me structure in my week and the chance to help others. I phone Joan every Tuesday morning and she’s always ready with a cheerful ‘Hello Sue!’ Over time, we’ve built a real connection. We chat about everything from the weather to family visits and I love hearing about her latest knitting project.

Make a big difference

“Volunteering has given me a sense of purpose and connection and something to look forward to each week. Even a small amount of time can make a big difference – both to others and to yourself.”

Volunteer driver Jeff Smith also shared how giving his time has helped him find purpose while helping others stay connected.

He explains: “I semi-retired and found myself with two days off each week. I wanted to do something meaningful with that time. I realised very quickly how much I enjoyed helping others. Being able to provide transport means people can get to appointments, go shopping and meet others.

Be part of the community

“For many, it’s more than just a lift – it’s an opportunity to stay connected and be part of the community. Helping others makes me feel good – it’s a great way to give something back.”

We provide a range of free services across Southampton, including befriending, transport to medical appointments and social groups, shopping support and telephone companionship – all delivered by our dedicated volunteers. These services play a vital role in helping people maintain independence and stay socially connected.

Annie adds: “If you have even a small amount of spare time each week, we would love to hear from you. We offer flexible volunteering opportunities to fit around work, family and other commitments.

How to get involved & more info

“Volunteering is not only about giving your time – it’s about building relationships, supporting others and becoming part of something truly special. If you have a spare hour, or so, each week, then we’d love to hear from you, as we always need more volunteers and befrienders. We can be flexible and work around your commitments. Please get in touch via 023 8250 0050 or volunteer@communicareinsouthampton.org.uk for a friendly and informal chat.”

Volunteers’ Week is a UK-wide campaign recognising the contribution volunteers make to communities and society and is an opportunity to celebrate and thank those who give their time to help others.

The services we provide are free to users, although beneficiaries are invited to donate if they can, and Communiteers are offered expenses.

Thank you
