International Day of Older People 2026
This International Day of Older People, October 1, we’re joining communities across the UK to celebrate the people, places and services that help older people stay active, independent and connected.
The national theme for 2026 is ‘What’s on Your Doorstep?’, encouraging us all to think about the opportunities, support networks and community connections available close to home, while recognising the barriers that can prevent people from accessing them.
Celebrating community connections
For many people, staying connected can be as simple as meeting friends at a local café, visiting a community group, attending a library event, or receiving support from one of our volunteers.
But for others, challenges such as poor mobility, transport difficulties, health conditions or loneliness can make the world beyond the front door feel much smaller. The 2026 International Day of Older People shines a light on both the opportunities and the barriers that shape how we experience our communities as we age.
We see every day how meaningful connections can improve wellbeing, confidence and quality of life.
How we help
For more than 30 years, we’ve been supporting older and vulnerable people across Southampton by helping people build and maintain meaningful connections within their communities.
We do this through:
- Friendship and befriending services
- Volunteer visits and telephone support
- Community activities and social opportunities
- Practical help
- Hosting welcoming social groups that bring people together, reduce loneliness and encourage new friendships
We create opportunities for connection by supporting a range of regular social groups and activities across Southampton. These groups provide safe, friendly spaces where people of all ages can meet others, share interests, enjoy conversations and become more involved in their community.
Our volunteers and social groups help make Southampton a more connected, age-friendly city where people can continue to enjoy the relationships, opportunities and support that help them age well. This reflects the aims of International Day of Older People 2026 and its focus on celebrating the people, places and services that keep us active and connected in our communities.
