SOUTHAMPTON 5k, 10k, HALF & FULL MARATHON

Sunday, April 11, 2027

Join our team!
Would you like to support the work of Communicare by taking on a running (or walking) challenge? We have charity spaces available for the 5k, 10K, half and full Marathon at the APB Southampton Marathon Festival on Sunday, April 11, 2027 and we’re looking for more runners to join our team!

By signing up to one of Communicare’s charity places you will be taking part in one of the best running events in the South, whilst raising funds to help our work with lonely and isolated people within Southampton.

We ask for just £10 to register for one of our charity places, with a commitment to fundraise at least £35 for the 5K, £60 for the 10K and half and £100 for the full marathon.

Your sponsorship will support our work with lonely and isolated people in Southampton so of course we would encourage you to raise as much as you possibly can over this minimum fundraising target!

What you will get from us:

  • One of our Charity Places for the event
  • Communicare technical fabric t-shirt to wear on race day
  • Support with your fundraising
  • Lots of support and encouragement on the day!
  • ABP will also give you a free finishers t-shirt – they charge all non-charity runners £20 for a t-shirt

What to expect from #TeamCommSoton

In joining our running team, you’ll get one of Communicare’s charity places for the event, a Communicare technical t-shirt to wear on race day and loads of support – both before the event in terms of fundraising and training, but also on the day from our volunteers and supporters who will be at cheering points around the route.

If you’ve already signed up to run in the event, you can still support our work, please get in touch and we’ll tell you more about how your run can make a difference to Communicare.

If you feel daunted by these distances or are more of a walker, please don’t be put off! If you would like to enter the 5K it usually works out cheaper for you to enter as an individual runner rather than use one of our spaces. We will give you a t-shirt to wear on the day and count you as a member of the team. However if you would like to enter the 5K with one of our places please get in touch and we’ll happy discuss it with you. We’re particularly keen on ideas which attract attention such as fancy dress or doing an activity whilst running. Contact events@communicareinsouthampton.org.uk / 023 8250 0050.

Race supporters needed!

We know that running isn’t for everyone, but we would love to hear from you if you would like to be part of our Support Squad for the Southampton marathon event on Sunday 6th April.

Our ‘Communibear’ costume is up for grabs if you want to make a statement and encourage our runners as they cross the Itchen bridge, or perhaps you would like to help staff our gazebo at the race village and tell people about the work of Communicare, as well as encouraging our runners before/after their event.

Maybe you’d prefer to stay out of the centre of town due to the road closures on the day, but you might like to recruit some more supporters and find a place that suits you – your front garden if you’re actually on the run route, a nice spot in the park or somewhere else along the routes (especially useful if it isn’t one of the areas which is known for being full of crowds as this is when the runners will most appreciate your support – it can be hard when it’s quiet out there!) and make a little Communicare cheer point? We’ll tell you who to look out for so that you can be spotting our amazing runners and giving them (and of course their running companions) support through clapping, cheering, singing, playing music – whatever you will enjoy. You will see the difference it makes to runners when someone calls out “Go on Imogen!” or “Great running Zara!” – it can give you a real lift and with a group it can be loads of fun too.

Maybe you have artistic talents and could make some banners, you might want to bring out an instrument, or go for good old pans to bang and things to clap. Whatever effort you put in is sure to be appreciated by those going by. We can give you information about the routes to help you plan a good cheering point.

We’d LOVE to hear from you. In our experience, this is a lovely activity whatever the age. Little ones can be hugely inspired by watching these events so don’t underestimate how much fun you can have bringing the family along to support.

Top Tips & Support

It’s so important to allow time to train well for an event.

Beginner level marathon training generally takes 16 weeks, while you should allow 12 weeks for a half marathon and 10 weeks for a 10km (assuming a reasonable level of fitness before you start).

You can download free training plans from the ABP Southampton marathon website: Download your training plan: www.southamptonmarathon.co.uk

If you have any questions, please get in touch with Bryony, who is one of Communicare’s Coordinators (events@communicareinsouthampton.org.uk). Our top tip is to allow good time to train as this can help you avoid running injuries and give you real confidence on race day. The event organisers even have training plans which you can download for free to set you up really well for a fantastic day whether you are aiming for your first marathon, a new PB or just to finish!

Fundraising

It might be daunting at first thinking about how to fundraise, but really the secret is about good communication. Your friends, family, colleagues are likely to be keen to support you when they understand 1) what you’re doing, 2) who you’re supporting and 3) why!

The first thing to do is set up a fundraising page with JustGiving. We send information about how to do this when you first sign up to run for us, please just let us know if you need this information re-sent.

Please follow the instructions to ensure that your page links directly with Communicare. This makes it really easy for your supporters to read about the charity and our work in Southampton. You can then explain more on your personal page.

Be honest with people – if you’re feeling nervous about the run, tell them – it shows that you’re human and people will want to encourage you. If they live nearby they may even come out to cheer you on on race day, or offer to run with you to help you train which can be really valuable! If you’re a more experienced runner aiming for a new PB, share this with people as they may be interested to follow you and see if you achieve it!

You can easily share the link to your fundraising page via social media, and/or emails as required to your friends, relatives and around the workplace if appropriate.

It is important to update people from time to time, so highlight some key times to send a little update (with the link again) so that people can see how you are doing towards your target and donate if they haven’t already done so.

Suggested key dates:

1) When you first sign up

2) When you start your training (still several weeks before the event which shows that you are committed and taking this seriously!)

3) Half way through your training – update people with how you’re getting on, are you enjoying it or finding it hard, are you well on track towards your fundraising target by now? If so, thank everyone who has donated so far.

4) 2 weeks before the event – most of your hard training work is done and it’s feeling real!

5) 1 week before the event – you’re planning for the day now!

6) 24 hours or the night before – What are you doing to prepare, how are you feeling?

7) After the event – with a photo that shows you did it – crossing the finish line, or afterwards with your medal.

8) It’s really nice to do a wrap up email when you’ve finished all your fundraising and update people about the total raised and thanking them.

By including the donation link every time you do one of these posts you are giving people gentle reminders to donate if they haven’t already. Those who have already donated have shown that they’re behind you and they’re likely to be interested in how you’re getting on so your updates will be welcomed.

Although we have minimum fundraising targets, we would love it if you set your fundraising target higher than this, eg £200 or more. This shows your commitment not just to running at the event but also supporting the charity, and more people are likely to contribute to help you achieve it.

There are also other more creative ways that you can fundraise. They don’t always need much effort and can be really enjoyable experiences too. You could consider:

Hosting a cake sale or a coffee morning, or a drinks evening. When people come you have an opportunity to tell them about the work of Communicare which they may then choose to find out more about. We can give you information if you need! We may be able to support someone they know, or they might like to find out about volunteering with us, so this is really helpful from our perspective. Such events are lovely social opportunities which are no burden for people to support. (Cake sales are always popular, just be extremely careful to avoid nuts or other ingredients which could be dangerous to anyone with an allergy, and label your cakes well. If other people are donating cakes make sure you know of any potential allergy risks beforehand!)

Asking a local restaurant to help you with a charity fundraising dinner. If you agree a cost per person with the restaurant, then you can sell your tickets to allow for this as well as a donation per person towards your fundraising. It’s another lovely opportunity for friends and family to enjoy socializing and guaranteed generation of funds.

Asking whether your employer might match your fundraising. Not always possible or appropriate depending on your work setting, but you might be surprised at how your employer might be willing to support you.

We’d love to hear your ideas and how you are getting on and will be keen to support if we can!

Help us fill our 15 marathon places

Runners and walkers are invited to sign-up early for the 2027 Southampton ABP Marathon, half marathon, 10K or 5K to raise funds for us (September 2026).

We’ve 15 charity places available, more than ever before, and have launched our recruitment drive earlier than usual to help fill them ahead of race day in April 2027.

Team Communicare

Our Manager, Annie, explains: “Whether you’re an experienced runner chasing a personal best, someone looking for a new challenge, or simply enjoy walking and want to support a Southampton cause, we’d love you to join Team Communicare.

“We have 15 charity places available this year, which is more than we’ve previously had, so we’ve decided to launch our search for runners and walkers earlier than usual. We’ve also reduced our minimum fundraising pledges because we want as many people as possible to have the opportunity to take part and support our work.

Make a real difference

“Every pound raised helps us continue supporting lonely and isolated people of all ages across Southampton through services such as befriending, transport, shopping assistance and our good neighbours’ network. The demand for our help continues to grow and fundraising events like this make a real difference.

“Our mission is to boost social connectedness across the city. We know how significantly loneliness can impact both physical and mental wellbeing and every person who joins our marathon team will be helping us continue providing vital support to people who need it most.”

ABP Southampton Marathon

The ABP Southampton Marathon takes place on Sunday, April 11, 2027, from 9am. Participants can choose from a 5K, 10K, half marathon or full marathon distance.

We welcome runners and walkers of all abilities.

Annie adds: “Please don’t feel that you need to be a seasoned runner to take part. The event is suitable for all levels and the shorter distances can be completed by walking. Whether you run, walk, or combine the two, you’ll be part of an amazing experience while helping people of all ages in your community.”

Fundraising pledge

Those applying for one of our charity places are asked to pay a £10 registration fee and commit to a minimum fundraising pledge of £35 for the 5K, £60 for the 10K and the half marathon, or £100 for the full marathon.

“Of course, we’d encourage everyone to raise as much as possible above these minimum targets, as every extra pound allows us to help more people across Southampton.”

Participants joining Team Communicare will receive one of our official event places, a Communicare technical fabric T-shirt to wear on race day, fundraising support and advice, and plenty of support and encouragement throughout their training and on the day itself.

In addition, ABP Southampton Marathon organisers provide all charity runners and walkers with a free finishers’ T-shirt. Non-charity participants are charged £20 for this item.

How to find out more or sign-up

Anyone interested in joining Team Communicare should call us on 023 8250 0050 or email events@communicareinsouthampton.org.uk or click here.

Please also fill in our application form here.

Annie adds: “If you know someone who has been thinking about setting themselves a challenge, improving their fitness or giving something back to their community, please encourage them to get in touch. Together we can help ensure fewer people in Southampton face loneliness and isolation alone.”

Team Flintstone take on ABP Southampton Marathon to raise awareness for us

FOUR runners are taking on May’s ABP Southampton Marathon 10K dressed as the Flintstones – complete with stone age car – to raise funds and awareness for us (April 2026).

The team hopes the eye‑catching outfits and car will highlight the finance and volunteers needed to help us boost social connectedness and reduce isolation for all ages in Southampton.

Unsung work

Forty-eight-year-old Kevin Sawers, who is running as part of Team Flintstone, said: “I’ve run the marathon for Communicare several times in the past because they do so much unsung work supporting people across Southampton and I’m really happy to help raise funds again for them this year.

“I’ve been running on and off for around 20 years and for the for 2026 ABP Southampton Marathon I’m taking on the 10K with friends Nicci Bolinger and husband and wife Nick and Hannah Willson in a Flintstones‑style car, so my main aim is to finish safely without falling over or bumping into anyone.

Great fun

“After juggling around the 5K one year and playing chess with Nick while running the 10K last year, this will be my third ‘silly’ challenge for a charity that’s very close to my heart as my wife Bryony works there. It promises to be great fun and I’m really looking forward to it.”

We need volunteers

Alongside raising funds, Team Flintstone is keen to shine a spotlight on our growing need for volunteers.

With loneliness affecting people of all ages, we rely on Southampton residents giving their time to help neighbours feel supported, connected and valued.

How we make a difference

Fellow Team Flintstone member, Hannah, who has also previously run the half marathon distance in the ABP Southampton Marathon for Communicare, explains: “I’m a regular supporter of Communicare and have seen first‑hand the difference it makes.

“We want to raise as much money as possible, but just as importantly, encourage more people to get involved through volunteering to help reduce isolation and boost social connectedness across Southampton.”

How to support Team Flintstone

The 2026 ABP Southampton Marathon takes place on Sunday, May 3, 2026, and includes a 10km, half marathon and full marathon. We’re hoping to raise more than £1,500 through the sponsorship of our entrants.

Anyone interested in sponsoring Team Flintstone can also do so via our JustGiving Team Page here.

Four to run Marathon for us & there’s still time to sign up

Four Southampton runners have signed up for the ABP Southampton Marathon on May 3 to help raise funds and awareness for us (March 2026).

The runners are participating in aid of us, to help support our work helping Southampton’s vulnerable and isolated, and we’re eager to hear from more runners, walkers or supporters keen to join our team.

The team

Among those running for us is Ali Fisher, aged 45.

She says: “I’m really looking forward to running the half marathon, which is 13.1 miles, at this year’s ABP Southampton Marathon event for Communicare. I’m well aware of the fantastic work the charity does, as I’ve worked closely with the team on a couple of projects and they’re amazing, so I wanted to do my bit to contribute towards fundraising.

“I’ve been running for nine years and began my journey as a positive way to support my mental health. My goal for completing the race is two hours and 30 minutes.”

Our four-strong team, along with Ali, includes, our Coordinator, Liz O’Neill and her husband Paul, both running 10km. Joining them is Keren, known as Ren, Belward, who is taking on her first ever half marathon.

Essential funds

This is the third time Liz has participated in the 10km for the charity, but the first time with Paul. She hopes to achieve a one-hour finish. Meanwhile, Paul is aiming for a time of one hour 15 minutes. Both are competing to help raise essential funds for us.

Importance of valuing people

Meanwhile, Ren’s mum Sally Ann is one of our Trustees. The 27-year-old says: “I’m running to highlight the importance of valuing people of all ages in our community, as well as supporting the charity’s vital work, which I’ve seen first-hand. My goal is to finish without walking!

How to sponsor

“I’ve set up my own JustGiving page, so would be delighted if people could sponsor me, so I can raise as much as possible for Communicare.”

Anyone interested in sponsoring the team can also do so via our JustGiving Team Page.

Why participate for us

Our Manager, Annie says: “We’re delighted our five runners have chosen to take on the ABP Southampton Marathon for us. Their support is vital in helping us continue boosting social connectedness and beating isolation in Southampton.

“There’s growing UK and international research showing how seriously loneliness harms physical and mental health. It’s even been linked to significantly higher risks of early mortality, heart disease, stroke and more.

Lifesaving work

“By taking part in the Southampton ABP Marathon our team will be helping us continue our vital, often lifesaving, work beating isolation and boosting social connectedness in our city. They’ll not only be raising invaluable funds for us, but they will also helping raise awareness for us too.

Join our runners or walkers

“We still have spaces available for runners and walkers in the full marathon, half marathon and 10K. If you have a place already, we can get it transferred to us too. Please join Ali, Ren, Liz and Paul and help fundraise for us. Sign up is available online here and it’s easy to do.

Join us as a supporter

“Not a runner; don’t fancy walking? We still need supporters, known as ‘Communicheerers’ too, plus our CommuniBear mascot will need someone to help him with his paw-some roadside appearances, raising spirits along the route! Please mail us to find out more, events@communicareinsouthampton.org.uk, and let’s make this year’s event our strongest yet!”
