Start the New Year by making a difference – this is Di’s story

As we step into the new year, many of us are thinking about resolutions – getting healthier, learning new skills or giving back to our communities.

If you’re looking for a meaningful way to make a positive impact in 2026, volunteering with us could be the perfect resolution.

Di’s journey with us

Our Communiteer, Di explains; “Five years ago, my volunteering story began when I spotted a flyer in my local Bitterne library advertising a visit from Bryony.

“At the time, I was drawn to helping at local lunch clubs because my career had strong links to food. Life, however, had other plans – health issues meant I had to change direction.

“I tried telephone befriending and then came an email asking for volunteer drivers and I thought: I can do this. That decision opened the door to a world of variety and connection.

Why driving changed everything

“Becoming a volunteer driver brought me into contact with incredible people and experiences. I’ve taken service users to hospital appointments and doctor visits, but also to places I never expected to go to – stud farms, racing stables, art galleries, Saints football matches, theatre trips and even a concert at King Edward’s School.

“Through Hampshire County Council, I paid for a driving assessment. After 50 years behind the wheel, it was reassuring to know I’m still a safe driver. That confidence, combined with the flexibility Communicare offers, means I can choose tasks that fit my schedule without being tied to a routine.

The joy of variety and freedom

“Every trip is different and that’s what makes volunteering so rewarding. You’re not just giving lifts – you’re giving independence, companionship and joy. And in return, you gain stories, friendships and the satisfaction of knowing you’ve made someone’s day a little brighter.”
