Why Ann volunteers for us
We’re often asked by people thinking of volunteering why they should choose us.
It would be easy to give you lots of reasons why, however it’s best if you hear from our volunteers yourself.
‘Volunteer Stories’
So, as part of 2025 Volunteers’ Week we’ve put together a selection of ‘Volunteer Stories’ to give you more information on what volunteering for us is all about and how it can benefit both our service users and you as well as.
Ann’s journey
Ann is currently helping in our office but has taken on many different volunteer roles with us during the last 20 plus years.
She says: “Like many a reality show contestant, my time volunteering with Communicare has sent me on a ‘journey’.
“When I started, I had a toddler, and that toddler is now 25! I drove people to appointments; did grocery drop offs and lots of other things that popped up ad hoc. As well as helping others, it helped me get out of the house and meet new people.
Welcoming & friendly
“These days I use my web editor experience to put together the weekly Southampton Mental Health Network Roundup email newsletter, which Communicare is the lead organisation on.
“It’s a great role as I transition into retirement. The team are welcoming and friendly and in the Northlands office we get the occasional surprise Communibakes’ treat, which is lovely.
Advice on volunteering
“My advice to anyone thinking of volunteering is to do something you are comfortable with and/or are skilled at.
“Everyone has something to add, whether it is befriending or behind-the-scenes admin support. And if you have trouble squeezing everything in, you can take on something smaller, or press pause. You will be welcomed back with open arms when you are ready to return.”
Like to volunteer?
If you ever have a spare hour, or so, each week, then we’d love to hear from you, as we always need more volunteers and the experience may benefit you too.
We’re flexible
We can be flexible and work around your other commitments whether you have a young family or are working.
