Celebrating Connection: International Day of Older People 2025
We join communities across the UK in celebrating the International Day of Older People on October 1 – a moment to recognise the vital role older adults play in shaping our society.
This year’s theme, ‘Building Belonging: Celebrating the Power of Our Social Connections’, resonates deeply with our mission here at Communicare in Southampton.
Older people are the backbone of our communities – they provide support networks in families, are mentors in businesses as well as volunteers, carers, neighbours and friends.
Sense of belonging
Their contributions help foster resilience, compassion and a sense of belonging across generations. Yet, many face barriers to connection, from reduced mobility and bereavement to digital exclusion and ageism and are isolated and lonely.
At Communicare, we work to remove these barriers. Through befriending services, community events and practical support, we help older people stay connected, active and valued. We believe that ageing should never mean isolation – and that everyone deserves meaningful relationships and a place in their community.
Make a big difference
This International Day of Older People, we invite you to celebrate with us. Whether it’s volunteering your time to help our service users who may be lonely and need a friend or by simply saying hello or sharing a smile when you pass someone on the street. These simple acts of connection make a big difference.
Together, we can build a Southampton where older people feel seen, supported and empowered and we can help prevent them from feeling isolated. Our work crosses all generations, bringing everyone together.
